Our society generally has such a deficit view of childhood, but children also exhibit abilities that adults often strive to recapture. To point out a few examples, children tend to have a&nbsp;<span style=\"background-color: white;\">strong sense of wonder, vibrant imaginative capacities, a heightened awareness of the world around us, and an ease with vulnerability. As adults, we&nbsp;work&nbsp;to cultivate these childlike qualities, to keep alive our wondering, questioning selves, nurture our imaginative capacities, pay more focused attention in our daily lives, and to be more open to genuine encounters with others. Yet we don\u2019t seem to recognize that children are sources of wisdom for revitalizing these<\/span><span style=\"background-color: white;\">&nbsp;aspects of ourselves.<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"background-color: white;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"background-color: white;\">Children exhibit a capacious capacity for wonder, viewing the world through new eyes and appreciating the mysteries at the heart of life.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\">A strong sense of wonder leads to a willingness to be surprised, to approach the world with a sense of astonishment. This is sometimes referred to as \u201cbeginner\u2019s mind,\u201d where we see what is around us with a fresh perspective. Watch a four-year-old in a spring garden, looking with wide eyes at flowers growing out of the ground. &nbsp;Or listen to the &#8220;why?&#8221; questions of a five year old, seeking to understand the world around her.<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Search \u201cchildlike wonder\u201d online and you will find thousands of pages devoted to helping adults \u201cregain their childlike wonder.\u201d Few of these pages, however, suggest that adults should seek the help of children. Yet children often are experts in viewing what is around them, even the simplest things, with wonder.<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\">When wonder is articulated, it is often through questions, and children\u2019s questions demonstrate a keen awareness of life\u2019s preciousness and fragility.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"background-color: white; border: none; text-indent: 0.5in;\">When I recently asked groups of nine and ten year old students what they thought were life\u2019s most important questions, their responses included:<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Why are we alive?<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Who made God?<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Is there a universe beyond the universe?<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">What happens when we die?<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Could the world ever end?<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">What will happen to the world in 20 years?<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">What makes someone love you?<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">What is the right thing to do?<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Will I be what I want to be when I grow up?<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Do my friends like me?<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">What is space made of?<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">What is the meaning of life?<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Do I matter?<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Will people remember me?<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><span style=\"background-color: white; text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">I will be writing posts here much less frequently this academic year, as I am trying to get this book written!<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"background-color: white; border: none; font-family: &quot;times new roman&quot;; font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the book I&#8217;m currently writing, I have been working on a chapter about children&#8217;s particular strengths.
