Here is a description:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: windowtext;\">How might society benefit if children were recognized as independent thinkers, capable of seeing clearly and contributing in valuable ways to our world?<\/span><span style=\"color: windowtext;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: windowtext;\">How would children\u2019s lives change if what they said was not often ignored or patronized?&nbsp;<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: windowtext;\">In a series&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: windowtext;\">of conversations with children&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: windowtext;\">about many of life\u2019s important philosophical questions,&nbsp;<\/span><i><span style=\"color: windowtext;\">Seen and Not Heard<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: windowtext;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"background-color: white;\">reveals children as perceptive and original philosophical thinkers. Guided by discussions&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: windowtext;\">about the meaning of childhood, friendship, justice and fairness,<\/span><span style=\"background-color: white;\">&nbsp;happiness, and death, the book considers how listening to children\u2019s ideas can expand our thinking about societal issues and deepen our respect for children\u2019s perspectives.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: windowtext;\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-indent: 0.5in;\"><span style=\"color: windowtext;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">In the United States and around the world, ageism remains a widespread prejudice, leading us to make assumptions about, dismiss, and underestimate the perspectives of people of particular ages, including children. Before they utter a word, their voices are judged as less important than those of adults, or as not important at all.&nbsp;<i>Seen and Not Heard<\/i>&nbsp;invites us to rethink our beliefs about children and become more receptive to the ways we can learn from the children in our lives.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">The book will be published by Rowman &amp; Littlefield in early 2021.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">This spring was for us at the&nbsp;<\/span>University of Washington Center for Philosophy for Children<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">, like it was for many people, a launch into education via Zoom.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Initially I was concerned that the interactive nature of my classes would not translate well to an online forum.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span>I have been surprised to find that facilitating philosophy discussions online, with both adults and with children, can be a powerful and meaningful experience. T<span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">he conversations I had this spring were thoughtful, honest, and inspiring. I learned a great deal and was thrilled that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/25\/well\/family\/children-philosophy-lessons-coronavirus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times reporter wrote an article<\/a> about our Philosophy Zoom classes for children.
