MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_I-bvyBpij2c\/SYs3QnNbJsI\/AAAAAAAAALQ\/jSdEJ5pCPYA\/s400\/117_1734.JPG\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:130%;color:#000099;\"><em>The House in Winter<\/em><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color:#000099;\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color:#000099;\">Here,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">in the year&#8217;s late tidewash,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">a corner cupboard suddenly wavers<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">in low-flung sunlight,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">cupboard never quite visible before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000099;\">Its jars<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">of last summer&#8217;s peaches<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">have come into their native gold\u2014<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">not the sweetness of last summer,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">but today&#8217;s,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">fresh from the tree of winter.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">The mouth swallows <em>peach<\/em>, and says <em>gold<\/em>. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color:#000099;\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color:#000099;\">Though they dazzle and are gone,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">the halves of fruit, the winter light,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">the cupboard it has swept back into shadow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000099;\">As inhaled swiftly or slowly,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">the sweet-wood scent goes out the same &#8211;<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">saying, <em>not world but the bright self breathing<\/em>;<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">saying, <em>not self but the world&#8217;s bright breath<\/em>.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">Saying finally, always, <em>gone<\/em>,<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">the deep shelves of systole and diastole empty. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000099;\">Or perhaps it is<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">that the house only constructs itself<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">while we look &#8211;<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">opens, from room to room, <em>because<\/em> we look.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">The wood, the glass, the linen, flinging themselves<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">into form at the clap of our footsteps.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">As the hard-dormant<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">peach tree wades into blossom and leaf<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">at the spring sun&#8217;s knock: neither surprised<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color:#000099;\">nor expectant, but every cell awakened at that knock. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000099;\">&#8212;
