One is the revival of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/iapc\/thinking-in-stories\/\">Thinking in Stories: Reviewing Philosophy in Children\u2019s Literature<\/a><\/em>\u00a0as an active weblog (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/iapc\/thinking-in-stories\/\">https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/iapc\/thinking-in-stories\/<\/a>). Each post in the weblog summarizes a popular children\u2019s story and reflects on how it raises philosophical questions intriguing to adults and children alike\u2014questions that invite playfully serious, inter-generational dialogue.\u00a0<em>Thinking in Stories<\/em>\u00a0began in 1979 as a column written by the late American Philosopher Gareth B. Matthews for\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/iapc\/thinking-the-journal-of-philosophy-for-children\/\">Thinking: The Journal of Philosophy for\u00a0Children<\/a><\/em>. Matthews invented the now robust field of philosophy in children\u2019s literature in the early 1970s and was invited by Matthew Lipman to produce the column as the sole contributing editor to the journal.\u00a0Matthews wrote 58 reviews of children\u2019s books and stories for\u00a0<em>Thinking in Stories<\/em>\u00a0between 1979 and 2006.\u00a0On his retirement, the column was continued by Dr. Peter Shea, through 2014. With support from Montclair State\u2019s College\u00a0of Education and Human Services, the column has been recreated as a weblog, and with support from the College\u2019s Department of Educational Foundations, reading levels have been indicated for the titles reviewed. Dr. Shea now serves as the contributing and commissioning editor of\u00a0the weblog.\u00a0Those interested in contributing a review should request a style guide by sending an email to Dr. Shea at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:shea0017@umn.edu\">shea0017@umn.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The second resource is the curriculum series\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/iapc\/wise-owl\/\">Wise Owl: Talking and Thinking about Children\u2019s Literature<\/a><\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/iapc\/wise-owl\/\">https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/iapc\/wise-owl\/<\/a>) that\u00a0Matthews developed with educators in Amherst public schools in the 1980s. The\u00a0series is designed to use children\u2019s literature to provide primary school students the opportunity to explore philosophical questions while developing critical and creative thinking skills. Each Wise Owl packet includes a Teacher\u2019s Guide to the philosophical issues in a children\u2019s book and to facilitating philosophical discussions with young people, along with reproducible Activity Cards with philosophical discussion questions based on the book. Similar guides to other children\u2019s books can be found at Matthews\u2019\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.philosophyforkids.com\/\">Philosophy for Kids<\/a><\/em>\u00a0website (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.philosophyforkids.com\/\">http:\/\/www.philosophyforkids.com\/<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The third resource is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/iapc\/gareth-b-matthews\/\">webpage about Gareth B. Matthews under the IAPC Fellows rubric<\/a>, which includes links to the above pages, as well as a link to the first-ever complete\u00a0<em>curriculum vitae<\/em>\u00a0of his publications in the three sub-fields he helped to initiate: philosophy in children\u2019s literature, philosophy of childhood, and philosophy for\/with children.
