I am reading this post that I posted a few months ago, and I was really surprised to see they responded. SO the first thing that came to my mind was A Dog’s Tail, by Mark Twain.

Comment on What makes something a home? by Milo https://plato-philosophy.org/what-makes-something-a-home/#comment-16886 Fri, 05 Dec 2025 09:02:39 +0000 https://www.philosophyforchildren.org/what-makes-something-a-home/#comment-16886 I think home has a lot to do with childhood. When you are young, say 6-16 years old, your neighborhood and geographical environment make a deep and permanent impression upon you. For the rest of your life these childhood impressions will feel like home to you. Maybe it’s the nearby ocean, or the mountain range that provides orientation. Maybe it’s a pond, a river, the tall buildings, the noise, the silence, the black soil, the rocky crags, whatever it is you grew up with. And this also applies to your social environment, what was familiar to you in your youth will be forever imprinted on your soul. And for better or worse, will tend to feel like home.

I like your ideas since I became curious about the reference to Plato in SEL. So I looked it up on the internet and you popped up. She said she didn’t want anything from the internet but I have the two scholarly references she wanted . I can’t imagine not wrapping this paper up with this reflection context and project a future in applying philosophy to SEL.

Hi Michael, Thanks for your engagement with this blog post. Certainly anecdotally yes in my practice I have observed this. Elsewhere (across Australia and globally) a correlation has regularly been noted between study of philosophy / inquiry and academic performance (outside philosophy).
